In the early 1920s, the population was around 200, and it remained at that level for several decades. However, the construction of the Colonsay potash mine in the late 1960s led to a significant increase in the town's population, reaching 526 by 1971. While employment at the mine remains important, with around 300 people from various communities working there, agriculture is also a significant contributor to the local economy. The area is home to a variety of crops and livestock, and the Saskatchewan Wheat Pool sells fertilizers, herbicides, pesticides, and seed products in Colonsay. However, the town's Saskatchewan Wheat Pool elevator was demolished in 2002 and replaced by larger inland terminals in the region. Colonsay still has a small selection of essential businesses and services.
