Farmland for Sale in the RM of Big Stick No. 141

The Rural Municipality of Big Stick No. 141 occupies a vast stretch of southwestern Saskatchewan, centred approximately 60 km south of the Trans-Canada Highway between Maple Creek and Swift Current. Named after Big Stick Lake—a large alkali lake that dominates the central portion of the municipality—this RM encompasses some of the most dramatic open-range landscape in the province. The terrain is classic Brown soil zone shortgrass prairie: wide, treeless plains broken by coulees, dry creek beds, and the occasional sandstone outcrop that hints at the badlands geography of the nearby Cypress Hills and Great Sandhills. Highway 32 runs through the eastern portion, connecting the area to Swift Current, while Highway 21 provides north–south access along the western side.

Big Stick is ranching country first and grain country second. The semi-arid climate—annual precipitation averages just 300–340 mm—favours native grassland over continuous cropping, and the municipality’s identity has been shaped by the cattle operations that have worked this land for over a century. The village of Golden Prairie and the hamlet of Tompkins (on the Trans-Canada to the north) serve as the nearest supply points, while Swift Current (80 km east) provides the full range of agricultural services, veterinary care, and livestock marketing facilities. The Brown soils here are light-textured loams and sandy loams that warm up quickly in spring but hold less moisture than the heavier soils farther east—characteristics that favour grass-based agriculture and drought-adapted cropping systems.

Agricultural Character of the RM of Big Stick

Ranching operations in Big Stick typically run large cow-calf herds on extensive native pasture, with individual operations often managing 5,000 to 20,000+ acres of deeded and leased grassland. The native prairie here—blue grama, spear grass, and June grass dominant—provides excellent forage quality when properly managed, and the carrying capacity averages roughly 15 to 25 acres per animal unit month depending on range condition and precipitation. Many operations supplement native range with tame hay and greenfeed grown on the more productive quarter sections, and winter feeding programs using stacked hay and grain screenings are standard practice. Crown grazing leases administered by the provincial government extend the land base available to local ranchers and are a critical component of most ranch business plans.

Where cropland exists in the RM of Big Stick, it tends to be on the better-drained upland flats where Brown soils reach Class 3 or 4 capability. Spring wheat, durum, mustard, and lentils are the primary crops, though yields are highly variable depending on growing-season rainfall. Producers here are among the most skilled dryland farmers in Saskatchewan, using extended rotations, chemical fallow alternatives, and precision seeding to maximize water use efficiency. Oil and gas activity from the southwestern Saskatchewan portion of the Williston Basin adds surface lease income on some quarters, and the combination of cattle, crops, and resource revenue creates a diversified income base for those who manage the full spectrum.

Why Buy Farmland in the RM of Big Stick

Big Stick appeals to a specific type of buyer: those who value scale, independence, and the authentic ranching lifestyle that only the Brown soil zone can provide. Ranch properties here offer the kind of contiguous land bases—measured in sections rather than quarters—that are virtually impossible to assemble in the more settled agricultural regions closer to Regina or Saskatoon. The price per acre is among the lowest in Saskatchewan, reflecting the lower carrying capacity and drier climate, but the cost per cow unit can be remarkably competitive when Crown lease access and surface lease income are factored into the equation. For ranchers relocating from higher-cost jurisdictions like Alberta or British Columbia, Big Stick offers an opportunity to scale up dramatically at a fraction of the capital cost.

The recreational and lifestyle values of this area should not be overlooked. The Cypress Hills—Saskatchewan’s highest point and a biodiversity hotspot—lie to the southwest, and the Great Sandhills to the northeast. Antelope, mule deer, whitetail, and upland birds are abundant, and the wide-open landscape has a stark beauty that draws people who want space and solitude. For buyers seeking a working ranch with genuine character and the room to build something substantial, the RM of Big Stick is one of the most compelling options in the province.
